An Obvious Scam

Category: General Stuff — Jerel Harwood @ 6:40 pm

Hey all,

Some of you got an email from me about this, I think it is important enough to post it here as well.

I just wanted to share a screen shot from an email I got today. It is obviously someone trying to scam me and steal my identity. I just wanted to give you all a heads up.

3 Reasons this is a scam:

1. The email address it comes from (circled red) service@irs.rd.gov rd.gov is not a U.S. government domain.
2. The url they want me to go to, to fill out the supposed form. That is a hexadecimal representation of an IP Address with a sub folder named www.irs.gov.
3. The IRS does not have my email address, I have never given it to them and official communications from the IRS would never come through email.

If you get an email like this do not click on the links provided or reply to them, just delete it and forget it.

Uptime… Downtime…

Well hopefully none of you noticed the short maintainance outage on my server. My friend Brent took the quick opportunity to install a bit more RAM in the server this morning while I was configuring some VPN tunnels for him. The server now has some much needed memory capacity, it is running on two gigabytes of RAM instead of one. This will help with the serving of the web pages and the processing of the emails coming through my spam filters. For the record I did grab a quick screen shot of the up time of the server before it was shut down:

That is 415 Days, 13 Hours, and 10 Minutes. We’ll see how long it can go this time. You’ve gotta love Linux.

Ohh and CITH stands for “Cat in the Hat”, I had a Dr. Seuss theme going when the server was built.

It’s a Marshmallow World!

[snowcone]Faythe and I built a snow-fort in the front yard this week out of the snow we’ve shoveled from the driveway. Today Esperanza decorated it with food-coloring and water. It looks like a giant snow-cone! The cheerful colors are much appreciated by this neighborhood, who all seem to be suffering from cabin fever. It’s hard to believe with all this snow that spring will ever come, but even in these cold winter day I can feel the change coming. My headaches are almost gone and the hats will soon go in the closet again. (Smile)

[snowcone2]School has posed some interesting challenges this semester. My accessibility services have been challenged by the head of the math department and if they win the dispute, I will not be able to earn any degree. Although everyone I talk to is frustrated and offended that they could do such a thing, no one seems to have the authority to force them, or allow me math substitution. The math dean won’t even meet with me on this matter until fall 2009. Guess He’s hoping I’ll transfer to a different school, or drop out by then. Guess He doesn’t know who he’s dealing with, I am a patient woman.

For all of you who know my sister Sarah, she has announced she is expecting a baby boy in June. I am so excited! Faythe and Noah are eager to welcome him into the family. Faythes’ response was,” YES!” several whoops and a victory dance.[snowcone1]

Happy Valentines day to all of you and happy birthday to my nephew Orin Jones!
